Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
It is important to keep your teeth clean and free of bacteria and plaque. If left undisturbed, the bacteria below the gumline can deteriorate the bone holding your teeth in place. This disease process is called active periodontal disease.
While we cannot grow missing bone back, we can remove the bacteria causing the bone loss with a procedure called non-surgical scaling and root planing. During the treatment, special instruments are used to remove calculus and flush out bacteria. Scaling and root planing is typically completed in two appointments.
Upon completion of non-surgical periodontal therapy, an evaluation appointment is scheduled to assess the healing of the gum tissues. It is recommended your teeth be cleaned every 3-4 months following this treatment to ensure that bone levels remain stable and bacteria levels are controlled.
